How To Plan Your Automotive Project!

Choosing a project car is a significant choice and, depending on the type of vehicle chosen, can lead to many different paths for the project to travel in. The different authenticities are known for their various traits but are not limited to one! Each person has their own unique style, and the variety of vehicles in existence provides endless possibilities, giving freedom for an owner to express themselves however they may choose. 

We at Garage13 intend to introduce a series to delve into different types of automotive projects. The purpose of the series is to showcase a variety of possible builds and methods, giving inspiration to both those who are new to the automotive scene or veteran enthusiasts. Readers can look forward to a focused article deep diving into each style including drift cars, overlanding rigs, daily drivers, static builds, and more! We plan to release an episode every week in blog format until the series is over.

BRENNEN: So! You want to get a project? Perfect, there are many options to choose from. The finished product is the goal, but it is also about falling in love with the journey. Every time you wrench on your own vehicle is a learning experience. When I first got my 1990 Mazda Miata MX-5, I found loads of bodywork that needed to be redone before I had the opportunity to change the colour; this is something I personally have never dealt with before. Essentially getting the car ready to begin my drift car build. My MX-5 is still a very long way from done, but I am learning new things each time I take something apart or have to do a task as simple as changing out the stock suspension or an alternator.  Throughout my time working on my MX-5 I fell in love with the painful yet satisfying process of fixing it, along with the help of my friends!

CHRISTIAN: On the other hand from Brennen’s experience, I bought my 1987 Mazda RX-7 back in June 2022 as a rolling shell. Why the car with the unreliable spinny engine?  The car was too clean to pass up, even as a rolling shell. I also wanted to challenge myself and learn more about these triangles.  It sat for 20+ years in someone’s field, but luckily there is no rust or paint damage on the car! The motor, of course, being a 13B rotary, has seized up. I bought a new motor, rebuilt it, and dropped it back into the car. I am currently still battling the issues it has, but by Summer 2023, I will be sliding it into a wall at Rocky Mountain Drift Club.

There is no incorrect way to build a vehicle. Style, size, origin, age, and power are all up to an owner to personalize to their own liking. Many different countries have facilities or a following for different types of driving. Coming next week, we will be releasing episode one of the build showcase series!
